The World Rowing Championships return to the US for the first time in 20 years and the 2017 World Rowing Championships, Embracing Our Differences and Benderson Development Company have partnered on a new initiative called “Adopt a Team.” During the competition, students from Sarasota and Manatee counties will attend and be exposed, educated and provided international experiences all while gaining knowledge about the countries participating in the regatta. For example, students at one school are researching China, while students at another school are learning about Israel.
The World Rowing Championships will be held at Nathan Benderson Park September 23 – October 1, with over 60 countries expected to participate. Students in both Sarasota and Manatee Counties were asked to create artwork that serves to welcome the athletes from different countries attending the international competition. Our school was given Portugal, and cadets in each art class created pictures that related to that country and to the sport of rowing.
Adriana Chavez’s work was chosen to represent SMA Prep. The picture will display at the park as an enlarged banner that will be placed among other vibrant and welcoming banners created by students throughout Sarasota and Manatee. Stay tuned for highlights when 130 SMA Prep cadets attend a field trip to the site and participate in an authentic global experience.
