Operation Outbreak (O2) is an innovative platform for STEM education on infectious diseases and outbreak preparedness created by Sarasota Military Academy Prep school and the Sabeti lab at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. This platform integrates an academic unit covering relevant science and humanities subjects with a culminating “outbreak simulation” experiential learning activity. This activity replicates a real-world outbreak scenario and guides hundreds of students on how to respond through a coordinated effort and use of technology, teaching them biology and public health in the process.

The Eco Team made Soil Sammies for Thanksgiving! Students placed rye grass seed in a knee high stocking, added water and dirt, and turned them upside down in water. In a few days, the grass pushed through creating a Prep version of a Chia Pet!

The Operation Outbreak educational platform, developed at Sarasota Military Academy (SMA), a local, public charter school, was recently named one of the world’s most innovative hybrid learning programs by a global educational awards program jointly organized by The Wharton School and QS Quacquarelli Symonds. SMA has been invited to attend the Reimagine Education Awards in London, England (8th-10th December, Queen Elizabeth II Centre). SMA Outreach Director Dr. Todd Brown will represent the Academy and present the Operation Outbreak (O2) program to 500 educational experts from across the world.
Sarasota Military Academy (SMA), a local public charter school, has announced plans for the 2019 SMA Wreaths Across America Campaign through an annual partnership with Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit that aims to remember fallen U.S. veterans, honor those who serve and teach children the value of freedom.
On Thursday, October 17, SMA-Major Pelletier’s class welcomed a very esteemed guest, one who endured many trials, suffered and lost many who were dear to her heart, with a soul of bright sunshine, providing warmth and wisdom. Her name is Rifka Glatz, an 81-year old Holocaust survivor, soon turning 82. Her story is one of many turns, of heartbreak and adversity, sorrow and pain, and most importantly, of love, joy, and kindness. Greeting us with the Hebrew phrase “Shalom,” she shared her story with us.
Prep's three touchdowns were scored by Cipriano, Xzavin, and Eli on throws from Alex, Peyton, and Jackson. The offense was further bolstered by Seth's outstanding running and Jayden's multiple catches over the middle. The defense was led by Eli's 3 interceptions as well as Seth's rushing and Adrian's hustle and flag pulling.
