K12 education in the 21st-century is undergoing a paradigm shift in an effort to keep up with the rapidly changing global environment young people are growing up in today. Sarasota Military Academy Prep is unique in providing a learning experience immersed in daily military principles of honor, respect and leadership as well as being an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School as of February 2016. The IB Middle Years Program (IB MYP) is a research-based teaching and learning framework specifically designed for ages 11-14. The program “encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, preparing them for success in further study and in life”. (ibo.org)
By giving students continual feedback on achievement progress, students have the opportunity to demonstrate deeper understanding and higher levels of achievement. The goal is to have students take ownership of their learning to show what they know and are able to do. Students continually establish individual goals for themselves for skills and have opportunities to reach them, which will enhance their learning.
Approaches to Learning
“ATL represents general and subject-specific learning skills that the student will develop and apply during the programme and beyond. The focus of this area is on teaching students how to learn and on helping students find out about themselves as learners so that they can develop learning skills.”
-MYP: From Principles to Practice
It is important for students to understand the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. If what has been tried has not worked, it is important to recognize that the process of becoming an effective and successful learner is to seek new pathways to success.
