SMA High School Academic Programs
International Baccalaureate, Diploma Program (IB DP)
For those juniors and seniors who are university bound, the IB is 2nd to none in collegiate preparation. Much of the IB DP curriculum can earn students college-level credit and nearly every university worldwide recognizes the academic rigor of The IB Diploma Program.
SMA cadets earning The IB Diploma attract the attention of college admission offices, across the state, country, and world. The IB DP is for SMA cadets who are serious about their academic future and are committed to challenging themselves to exceed their own expectations.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college-level curriculum, challenging the students to learn college-level study skills and preparation techniques for final exams. The content covered in AP classes is broad and deep so that the student carries away with them a solid understanding of the content material.
Many junior colleges and universities across the state and country recognize and accept AP classes for collegiate credit, however, that is always at the discretion of the institution. Regardless of college credit acceptance, AP courses provide students with the option of challenging themselves in core content areas at a higher level than traditional general education options.

SMA offers juniors and seniors the opportunity to take State College of Florida (SCF) courses while attending high school. For some cadets, this is a valuable way to earn college course credit free of charge and still complete high school requirements for graduation. The student may choose to take one or more SCF courses and even achieve an associate degree while earning their high school diploma.
This program choice is for young adults who can manage both the coursework and the schedule. The SCF dual enrollment program is an excellent option to get a head start on a college career and save considerable tuition dollars.
Contact the SMA dual enrollment coordinator at the high school for more information about the SCF Dual Enrollment program.
Florida Standard Diploma
The Florida Department of Education oversees the public school system and graduation requirements for the state. SMA is a public charter school and follows the FLDOE and the Sarasota County School District guidelines and requirements for public secondary education.
The Florida Standard diploma is earned by all students graduating from SMA as the minimum requirement by the FLDOE. The guidelines within the standard diploma also offer other pathways to graduation. To learn more about the FSD and high school curriculum options, visit FLDOE.org.
Suncoast Technical College
SMA participates in a dual enrollment partnership with Suncoast Technical College, the county’s technical training college. For qualified juniors and seniors attending SMA, a wide range of technical career training is available, free of charge. For some SMA cadets, a career in technical services is ideal and receiving that training while earning a Florida Standard diploma is perfect. Students enrolled at SMA can meet with their academic counselor for more information on the STC Dual Enrollment program. To learn more about this program, visit Suncoast.edu.
